Chalk Talks on Alcohol
By: Father Joseph C. Martin
Chalk Talks on Alcohol was originally published in a cloth edition as No Laughing Matter.
In the pages of Chalk Talks on Alcohol, Father Martin acknowledges Lt. Col. Jud Sage, USMC, who took several of Father's talks and put them into a readable format. Father also acknowledges Mae Abraham by saying, "Without whose inspiration and guidance, I could have done nothing."
In the preface, Father Martin states, "So I have set out to write a book of hope. I want to share with as many people as possible my beliefs about the disease, based mainly upon what I have learned from others, especially what I have learned from many of the top professionals in the field." Father goes on to say, "I pray that this book will help save lives. I pray too that you who read its pages will find the peace of soul that the good God meant for you."
Chalk Talks on Alcohol is meant to be a book for everyone, but most of all for the lay person. This person knows of a friend, relative, co-worker, or someone even closer who is having a problem with alcohol. Father's concern is for the man or woman who knows little of alcoholism beyond the fact that such a thing exists.
The three talks contained in the book are: "Chalk Talk", "Guidelines", and "Family". Father Martin says, "Far too many people die of the disease." This need not be and perhaps this book may help reduce the awful number of needless tragedies. May it be, as Francis of Assisi said, "A message of hope and help for the alcoholic and for everyone who knows one."
